Archival Fine Art Printing
Set Up Charges for Reproduction Printing

This is a digital service. Your original image must be scanned using one of several available methods.

A set up fee will always be charged to prepare a new job for Archival Fine Art Printing. The cost will vary greatly depending on several factors. What you are starting from and the nature of the final reproduction are the key issues. The set up will take the original, copy film, or digital file through the scanning, prepping, proofing, and archiving stages. In most cases, at least two or three proofs are needed to verify the accuracy of a digital file before it is ready for final printing. Some artists may choose to further pursue a specific color balance or “feel” for their image. Special masking is sometimes necessary to modify specific areas within an image. The number of proofs will depend on the difficulty in matching the original media and the quest of the artist for accuracy. The total set up charges are based on scans, computer time, proofing, and final archiving.

Once the set up is completed and the final proof is signed off by the artist, the final printing can begin. Ordinarily, scans take 3 to 4 days, set up and proofing takes 5 to 7 working days and the final printing stage takes another 2 to 3 days for short runs and longer for larger orders.

Photo Craft can archive the master adjustment files which are specific to our printer and the media chosen. We recommend that you order two sets of CD's; one for yourself and one set for our library.

It is important to note that we strive to use the most up to date methods for maximum quality. The technology (both hardware and software) changes rapidly. We may update our systems as often as every six months. Therefore, files that have been prepared and proofed should be printed as finals immediately. Limited editions should be printed as a complete set. Future print runs may have notable deviations from the original run. While we are able to make new modifications and proofs (at regular charges(, advances in technology may not allow exact reproduction of earlier copies. A good example would be improved inks. The new two or three level Black inksets will render a different contrast than older prints made with a single Black. It will be impossible to match old prints with new ink systems.

Stage 1Scanning original image - Options are:
- Repro scans from original art or copy film
-Drum scans from copy film
- Direct flatbed scans from oversized art
Prices vary by size and method. Range is $12 to $120.
You may submit your own digital files, but they must meet our criteria.

Stage 2Photoshop time on the computer to adjust color, density, saturation, contrast, hue and sharpening.
Most time is accounted for in the proof and final print charges. Special masking is billed at $60/hour.

Stage 3Proofs are made on the media of choice for client review. Further modifications can be made if needed.
Most proofs (8×10) are billed at $25 each.

Stage 4Upon approval, CD's are made of both the master layered file and the printing files (built to each print size ordered). CD charges are $7.50 each. We recommend buying two CD's for $15.00; one master for you and one for our library. There is no extra charge to store CD's in our library for future printing.
